March 26, 2009. Today is the day of official opening of the BaselWorld Watch and Jewellery Show 2009 which is one of the most important and most awaited events in the world of watchmaking. The world’s most renowned watchmakers have come to Basel to demonstrate their latest novelties. The exhibition has only started its work but there is already some news from Switzerland.
Swatch Group…
…is the main newsmaker of the day. First of all it has been announced that Tissot is going to exhibit its products separately. Of course the well-known Swiss brand has not left the Group but at this BaselWorld the company will demonstrate their watches at a separate stand which actually is rather spacious and looks quite attractive. Actually the Tissot’s stand is located at the former Oris’s place. The latter moved a bit nearer to the escalator. In the result of these moves Chronoswiss had to replace its green stand from its traditional place. Now the stand of the brand is situated at the 2nd floor.
The second news by Swatch Group is that for the first time Tiffany & Co. is demonstrating its watches at the watch show in Basel. To make this possible Longines had to replace a bit its stand to give some space to Tiffany & Co which is going to show its latest collections of very interesting and original timepieces.
The very first displays allow to speak about very interesting novelties by cK, Certina and Longines.
The Second Floor…
…is traditionally rich in fashion brand stands. The place seems to remain unchanged though some new names appeared among the old residents. The “navigation” at the show this year is a bit inconvenient due to absence of a map which was traditionally added to the press-catalogue. But the catalogue itself has become much more interesting and informative.
Hall No.5…
… looks very promising. It includes stands of Russian watchmaking companies as well as the stands of new European brands. Two timepieces that are going to be the epicentre of Hall 5 are the tourbillon watch by Constantin Chaikin notable for the orthodox calendar and movement with 1000 stones and Maximililan Junkers Zeppelin which also looks very interesting.
Entertainment…
… promises to be traditionally rich and numerous. Judging by the preliminary programme most brands are not going to cancel presentations, cocktails and parties. By the way the biggest number of events is announced by De Grisogono which make you to recollect an old joke used to circulate among the managers of Enron: “when the Titanic was going down it was going down with all the chandeliers alight…”
On the whole despite of all negative prognoses there are no significant changes or cancellations at the BaselWorld 2009. Practically all companies preserved their places and the stands look traditionally posh. Though it’s only beginning…
